There are two things that contribute to health:
Having a healthy immune system; and
Not catching an illness or disease
Actually, there’s probably only one thing. And that’s having a healthy immune system
When your immune system is healthy, your body is naturally equipped with all the barriers, warriors and defences it needs to keep out just about anything
Now more than ever this is a key thing to think about:
Are you doing enough to boost your immune system?
Contributing factors include the usual suspects:
30 minutes of exercise a day
Eating well; nutritious foods that fuel your body, rather than challenging it
Getting enough sleep
Breathing fresh air
Having quality downtime, through things like meditation, yoga and sex
Drinking plenty of water
Getting the right supplements; plenty of vitamin D for example, which is hard to find naturally when winter hits
But what about the unusual suspects?
Did you know that when you eat sugar, it paralyses your white blood cells for 5 hours?
This is some of what Google says about white blood cells:
White blood cells defend the body against infection and disease by ingesting foreign materials and cellular debris, by destroying infectious agents and cancer cells, or by producing antibodies
Although white cells are found in the circulation, most occur outside the circulation, within tissues, where they fight infections; the few in the bloodstream are in transit from one site to another
Pretty important allies in immune health – if staying healthy is about remaining in harmony, your white blood cells are the peacekeepers. The ones who stop trouble starting and man the entry gate into your system
If sugar paralyses them for 5 hours and you have a sugary tea or coffee every four hours, let’s say, that means your peacekeepers are constantly asleep and you have no one to stop the troublemakers from causing havoc within your body
Equally, you may have a store-bought cereal for breakfast, a processed meal for lunch, a few biscuits or a danish pastry mid-afternoon and a dessert with your evening meal
All immune cripplers
Everyone I’ve spoken to who quit sugar – and by sugar I’m not including fruit, fruit is super healthy and very good for your immune system – not one single person misses it after the first few days. Personally I’ve been sugar-free for nearly seven years and I never crave anything sugary and have not missed any of the foods that contain sugar
The only thing I miss is baking... but there are workarounds for that; ie non-sugar recipes and ways to convert recipes that contain sugar into their non-sugar counterparts
